Online Reputation Memo
TO: Jeff Skidmore
FROM: Jill Little
DATE: December 8, 2009
SUBJECT: Online Reputations
Jeffery D. Skidmore Online Reputation
When I Google searched you, Jeffrey D. Skidmore the first link was to your blog the Draft Press Release 2: Image Management post. The second was your blog again, this time your Day 9 post about eating healthier and losing weight came up. I do not really understand why these two posts came up first before any of your other posts from your blog, but these two posts is what the world is seeing first about you.
After typing in Jeffrey D. Skidmore Utah State University I was able to locate your LinkedIn profile as the third link from the top of the first page. All I really found out from this was that you have made one connection on LinkedIn. Because I already knew you were a Public Relations Student at Utah State University, your viewable profile also had your expected graduation date at 2010.
Jeffrey D. Skidmore Utah State University also brought me to your Hard News CafĂ© article “Dents and dings worth the raw fun of rugby, players say” twice; making you the third, fourth, and fifth link under this search title.
When I searched for Jeffrey D. Skidmore Public Relations your blog post Draft Press Release 2: Image Management came up first on the list, and your LinkedIn profile was the third link available.
I would say that all of your online reputation is positive. One suggestion I would have for you is to update and really use you LinkedIn profile because it seems to come up regularly and it is a good place to store useful information about you for potential employers since they will already have multiple examples of your writing abilities.

I think the Seattle Sounders FC is doing a fantastic job with public relations. They have over 20,000 season ticket holders and always pack Quest Field for Sounders FC games. The thing that Seattle Sounders FC is doing in public relations that I think is really smart is their use of well educated, intelligently placed spokes people.
Seattle Sounders FC can boast an elaborate array of “celebrity” spokes people including:
Franchise owner: Drew Carey
Team Captain and former United States National Team Goal Keeper: Kasey Keller
Former Arsenal FC and Swedish National team star: Freddy Ljungberg
Major League Soccer All Star: Freddy Montero
Team Manager (head coach): Sigi Schmid
All of Seattle Sounders FC’s spokes people have great credibility and have launched campaigns for Major League Soccer and for the Seattle Sounders FC. These campaigns are doing more than fighting for their individual causes; they are spreading the branding of the Seattle Sounders FC and Major League Soccer.
Drew Carey appeals to people who may not have ever watched soccer before, but now are becoming slightly more interested, if only to find out what that funny guy is talking about now. I think his reach is going much farther toward the non soccer fan or even the casual soccer fan. He has done wonders for getting the less than dedicated soccer watchers to attend games and buy merchandise.
Kasey Keller is helping to get support and respect from long time United States National team fans. Seattle Sounders FC is a Major League Soccer expansion team. Typical expansion teams do not receive much respect, but having a legend like Keller between the pipes has really helped the Seattle Sounders FC get off the ground in Major League Soccer.
Freddy Ljungberg is an international football icon. Through his stardom with Arsenal and the Swedish National Team Ljungberg is bringing international attention to Major League Soccer. His reach is with the incredibly dedicated soccer fans from overseas that are suddenly interested in how he is doing in his new league. He is helping Major League Soccer to gain international respect.
The reason I think Seattle Sounders FC is doing such a good job with their public relations campaign is the fact that it does not look like a public relations campaign to most people. They made diverse selections that are hitting multiple publics at the same time. Keller inside the United States, Ljungberg in Europe, Montero in South America, Carey to the non soccer publics, and Schmid to the administrative levels in Major League Soccer. Great public relations planning and execution by Seattle Sounders FC.

The New York Times printed a “puff piece” interview based article on recent You Tube villain Elizabeth Lambert. Lambert made several aggressive tackles and just downright violent plays in a NCAA Women’s soccer match versus Brigham Young University on November 5, a semi final game in the Western Athletic Conference Championship.
Lamberts “fame” rose as clips from the game reached ESPN’s Sports Center meriting commentary from former United States Women’s World Cup Champion team Captain Julie Foudy. The clips were then seen thousands of times on You Tube, professional and personal blogs, and via several other social media outlets.
In a previous post I thought that New Mexico would need to get some good public relations flowing to try to salvage some of their once good reputation. Well I am happy to say that New Mexico’s public relations professionals did not disappoint me. They have already been out in full force trying to manage the crisis situation they have been handed.
On November 18, there was an article about the incident in the New York Times. Lambert was interviewed, and painted to be an angel that was provoked and is being attacked and treated terribly since the incident all at no fault of her own. All the blame for her actions was nicely diverted to other players on both teams, the referee, and her coach.
The article is clearly polarized starkly in favor of Lambert, and her apparent cause. I definitely think this is the first of many public relations moves by New Mexico. Getting an article in the New York Times is a great start. They certainly still have a long way to go to smooth Lambert’s actions over in the soccer community. Just reading the comments will tell you that.
I think this type of article might help to get some of the people that just saw the video to take pity on Lambert, but not the soccer community, especially not soccer players. Someone that has been in games just as intense and just as important will not allow her to use a “get out of jail free card” on this one. Her actions were pretty fierce. They have a long road ahead to reach their desired public.
I think New Mexico really missed the mark with this piece. I think their most important public is soccer players/fans and I think this article will only make them more upset; as illustrated by the comments and blogs already commenting on this article published by the New York Times. It will be interesting to see what New Mexico’s next move is.

How serious should public relations professionals really get about social media? Consider the number of users on Twitter, Facebook, Second Life, You Tube, and your head starts to hurt just a little bit. The opportunities for public relations through these new forms of media are absolutely endless. I would dare say that most of them have yet to be found and utilized to their fullest potential.
Social media can help you track the number of people talking about your clients, and even what they are saying about specific products or services they are providing. Giving you instant feedback on what the public really thinks about your company. With those amazing opportunities and information packs social media also provides multiple challenges for public relations professionals.
Before social media a broken guitar would not have even registered on the scale of public relations problem, but thanks to social media it is now labeled as a crisis! Social media gives customers a place to talk about different products, relate to each other’s experiences with the product, so if that experience is not good, the experience will travel at least twice as fast, and now result in a crisis.
I am learning something new about social media every day. I think the impact that social media is having on the world is greatly underestimated by public relations, and marketing professionals. In my opinion a smart public relations firm would be getting on board with social media and hiring some young fresh public relations graduates who understand social media to launch their clients “social identity.” Sometimes who you appear to be online is more powerful than who you actually are.

ReAL Salt Lake has made it to the Eastern Conference Final against the Chicago Fire, but the game is going to be played in Chicago, at the Chicago Fire’s home stadium. Since the fans at Rio Tinto stadium have been so instrumental for ReAL Salt Lake this year ReAL Salt Lake’s public relations department decided to make a great public relations move…
Create a blitz of Facebook fans, trying to get more fans than the Chicago Fire have on their Facebook fan page before game time! It has really created a unified group of fans online. The goal is to reach 7,000 fans (the Chicago Fire have 6,000 and something) by Saturday morning before the team leave their hotel to head to the field. So in a nut shell they wanted to get 7,000 fans in two days, well I think they will make it. On Friday at 3:00 p.m. they had 6,976 fans on their Facebook page.
It is really amazing the power of social media in marketing, image management, branding and so many other facets of public relations. I think ReAL Salt Lake was super smart in this social media blitz. They were smart to turn to social media and they really created lots of buzz around this game.
They also encouraged their Twitter followers to become fans of the team on Facebook. Their blog has really improved and was a great place for them to also promote this fan page blitz to “put out the Fire in Chicago.” I think the play on words really helped them get more “fans” and increase the team loyalty and indirectly promote the game and encouraging fans to remember to watch this crucial away game for ReAL Salt Lake.
I think ReAL Salt Lake has hit a home run with this simple media campaign that really did not cost them anything, just a little time and maybe some research to find out about the Chicago fan page on Facebook. I think it was very well done and nicely executed. I certainly hope they make it to 7,000 fans by their deadline.

I have been getting several promotional codes and offers through my Facebook and Twitter accounts. More and more companies are getting in on the action of using social media to their advantage. I think social media is a great way for small companies to effectively advertise with little to no budget.
I think giving out promotional codes and offers though social media networks is really increasing loyalty for these companies, and helping them target their already loyal customers. I know that I have spent more money with companies that are sending me promotional material through social media outlets, because I know about the opportunities earlier than I did before, and receiving it over social media almost makes those receiving the promotions feel like it is a personal invitation more than just a mass mailing would have in the past.
I have been receiving multiple promotional codes that are only available to Twitter followers, or Facebook fans. Sending promotions to your followers or fans has really helped companies know what people are already their loyal customers and then reward them and enhance their loyalty through these social media outlets. I think companies really need to jump on this social media wave before it runs out. There are so many amazing opportunities for companies through social media.
I am excited to graduate and start helping companies better utilize social media for their public relations. I think the possibilities are endless for social media. I am sure by the time I graduate all the stages for social media will be completely different, but equal if not more influential than the ones that are currently available.

New Mexico’s Elizabeth Lambert's actions against Brigham Young University players in Mountain West Conference tournament will certainly require the school and especially their sports department to kick public relations into full gear. I would guess that a crisis management plan was not readily available for what resulted from Lambert’s actions on the field. I am sure however that now the Lobo’s are running full pace in crisis management.
The video of Lambert “attacking” several BYU players made an appearance on ESPN’s Sport’s Center with former United States National team captain Julie Foudy. After the national coverage on ESPN countless newspaper and blog sites picked up the video and started adding their commentary to the actions of Lambert during the game.
On You Tube Lamberts “fame” as grown faster than anyone would have expected, thank you social media! Lamberts video on You Tube has already reached 31,252 views on You Tube alone not even including all the views on ESPN’s page and other blogs and news sources. Sources say that Lambert’s video has received more views faster than the famous You Tube clip Bubble Boy.
New Mexico has already handed down an indefinite suspension to Lambert, but I have a very good feeling that it will not be enough to regain their once good name. It will be very interesting to see the public relations that comes out of New Mexico regarding this game. They have been thrust into the spotlight with far less than favorable circumstances.
I think they need to do some social media public relations with all of their sports, and their current students and fans. I think this will probably affect them and the way they support their sport teams. I can also see a need for some public relations to other schools that they will be playing next season, making sure they know their players will be safe and treated with respect. I think it will be pretty hard for New Mexico to schedule pre-season matches next year. No one wants their star players hurt before the season even starts.
This story is far from over and will be interesting to follow and see how all sides react to this new found fame.

I am obviously very biased on this topic, because I grew up in an agriculture income based home, but I think this article is just too over the top! I had to comment on it. I think the best part of this article is the disclaimer at the bottom of the article. It is actually hilarious. It makes the article sound like an infomercial. I wonder if the article was actually just paid space written to look like an article.
The “points” made in this article are really quite laughable actually. The things it talks about as cruel and unusual punishment either are exaggerated situations, not common practice, or are mere facts of life that no one can change. Sorry that you got attached to a product that lost its value in its current stage, so it was sent somewhere it would have a value and that hurt your feelings. Death is a part of life.
The best part of this article though is the fact that they mentioned the little girl’s PETA water bottle and how it was not accepted well at the local fair. Why is that news? Everyone knows it would not be accepted well there. If an organization was taking away your livelihood you would not be a fan of their merchandise either. I don’t know why that was such a big deal. In fact I don’t think it was as big of a deal as the article makes it out to be. I think this is another one of PETA’s methods to get people interested in their cause.
“Like most little girls, my stepdaughter loves animals. She joined a local 4-H club when she was 9, solely because "cows are cool."” Cows are cool? Who even says that? I have heard one person actually say/believe that statement, and she is a rancher. This opening paragraph already makes you think that everyone is like this little girl, when in reality I think she is probably pretty alone in her love for cows.
Unfortunately I think it is a great approach for PETA to be taking. I think they are deceiving readers and creating an unrealistic reality for readers. They are trying to use this feature story as negative public relations for the 4-H, and staging it though a person who assumedly knows something about 4-H and has a family connection. Yea they sound really unbiased we should find out what there opinion is. And hilariously his stepdaughter is still in 4-H so apparently it is not as bad as he makes it out to be.
I wonder how much this article will actually affect the 4-H organization. It will be interesting to see if there is any follow up on this article by the 4-H. I doubt they will even notice this ridiculous article was written.

Four teen boys in American Fork attempted to rap their order at a local McDonalds. Later that evening following a high school volleyball game the boy’s car was pulled over and they all received a citation for disorderly conduct resulting from the attempted rapped order.
What! They received a disorderly conduct citation for rapping? What did they do that was disorderly? The way they were talking? How is that even possible? Well apparently in American Fork it is very possible. I personally think that this whole event will cause a big stir and result in abundance of very negative publicity for the McDonalds location, and the police in the area.
I found out about this story via facebook. (Yes, you may now insert social media plug here) After reading the story and watching the video clip available online I am sure this will cause a negative movement towards the local police and the McDonalds location by more than just the local high school students.
The comments on this story were very passionate and very negative towards the McDonalds location and the local police force. I am sure both the police and the McDonalds location will have to do some image management promotions following this stories publication and mass viewing following several social media venues.
I think both the McDonalds and the police did not look ahead in this situation to see how this little mishap will affect them and their image. I am very interested to see how they try to combat the wave of negative media they will be soon receiving. This is a good time for their public relations personnel to panic.

United States Mens National soccer team star forward, Jozy Altidore was recently fined an undisclosed amount, and benched for one game at his current club Hull City for apologizing for being late to a match. Altidore publicly apologized via his twitter account for being late to the match. However, Hull City manager Phil Brown was not pleased with his young striker’s decision.
Brown did not want the team’s business being so readily available online, but Altidore seemed to want to make sure everyone knew that he was sorry for his tardy arrival. Altidore is only 19 years old, and frequently posts updates for his fans on his twitter account.
The tardiness of Altidore was not in the main soccer media until Brown threw a hissy fit. I think that Altidore tweeting about his tardiness was not that big of a deal. In fact my personal bias is that I like it and it made me respect Altidore even more. I think the public relations blunder came on Brown’s part making such a big stink about the tweet.
Rumors are now that Brown is soon to be released by Hull City. Not only for this instance of course, but his constant media/public relations blunders combined with lack of performance on the field has caused Brown’s job to be called into serious consideration.
I think this goes to show how much public relations affect everything around us. Every industry is affected by public relations. After the final decision is made on the current manager of Hull City it will be interesting to see what kind of public relations move Hull City makes. They have some very unhappy fans that will need to be soothed by more than just improvements in the teams play.

I recently purchased a vintage designed New York Yankee shirt. It is a replica of Mickey Mantle’s jersey. Amazon is currently carrying several such shirts. Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and others are available right now. Interestingly enough at a slightly lower price than a similar designed shirt for the team’s current players.
I think that is absolutely ingenious public relations. Those guys are legends. Even people who are not New York Yankee fans that I have talked to have gone out and purchased shirts. What the New York Yankees are selling is not so much a shirt, as a memory. A memory of the “good old days” even though the people I know that purchased the shirts were not even alive during the reign of the Babe, they somehow still feel a connection to that time in baseball.
I think the New York Yankees have really hit this one on the head. The idea to sell vintage jersey replica shirts for a slightly smaller fee is a wonderful public relations move on their part. One of my friends purchased a shirt after I told them about their availability to try to illustrate to her new boy friend that she had indeed been a New York Yankee fan for a very long time.

Countless papers all over the World are reporting on how the German Mens National Soccer Team will have to wear bullet-proof vests during their stay in South Africa in June 2010 for the World Cup. The Germans a heavy favorite to win the cup are apparently also a heavy favorite to come home injured or even worse.
The crime rate in South Africa has come under intense fire as the World Cup quickly approaches and reports are starting to research the area their teams will be playing in. Already several reporters have been robbed in the country while writing articles for the World Cup preview.
Several reporters have shown great concern for the level of crime in South Africa and have tried to have the cup moved to a safer location, but have failed miserably. FIFA will never admit to committing such a ridiculous error as to schedule their largest, probably just the largest event in the world in a location unfit for its players to be in. Several players’ safety have specifically been called into question including German super-star Michael Ballack.
Reports on the added security measures still falls short of what many nations consider secure. All players are strongly encouraged never to leave the team hotel except for team sanctioned transfers to games. Team sanction transfers will consist of personal body guards for most if not all of the players in the cup.
The selection of South Africa for the 2010 World Cup still baffles me. The negative press that FIFA is receiving is really astonishing. I think this decision will cost FIFA thousands of dollars in promotions after the cup, and security measures to keep the teams safe during the cup. I think it will be interesting to see the attendance rates of this cup compared to other cups.
I really worry that this situation can quickly escalate from a blunder to a complete crisis if a tragedy were to occur involving a World Cup player. If I were in the public relations department of FIFA I would be doing everything I could to make sure this does not escalate into a huge crisis. I would be encouraging FIFA to spend all the money necessary to make sure that nothing goes wrong during this World Cup. All eyes are going to be watching and focusing on the questionable decision to hold the cup in South Africa.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FREE HALLOWEEN CARNIVAL IN MORGAN COUNTY
October 26 at Rees’s Ranch
MORGAN, Utah – A free Halloween carnival will be provided on October 26 from 6 p.m. till 10 p.m. at the Rees’s Ranch by members of the Morgan 10th Ward. The entire community is encouraged to come and enjoy the festivities that will be provided.
“The carnival will have something for everyone. Please bring your entire family” said Ward Activities Committee Chair Kristen Call. During the carnival humorous black and white Halloween films will be shown. A spook alley will be provided for the older, or maybe just the braver, carnival attendees. An array of traditional carnival games and activities provided.
Carnival games and activities will be set up and color coded to differentiate age appropriate games. Ages will be broken down, and marked as follows: 3 years-old and below, yellow; 4-7 years-old, purple; 8-12 years-old, orange; 12 years-old and up black. Carnival games will range from traditional to innovative depending on age group.
Carnival games will include Mummy Bottle Toss, Spiders Web Donut Race, Pumpkin Bowling, Frankenstein Bean Bag Toss, and a Graveyard Dig. All the games will provide prizes to participants of all ages. Children are strongly encouraged to dress up for the carnival.
Community sponsors will be helping to provide complimentary refreshments at the carnival including: caramel popcorn, cookies, candy corn, apples, cup cakes, pumpkin ice cream, and warm apple cider.
The spook ally will be held in the old barn adjacent to the Rees Ranch shop. All events will be marked with large Halloween signs. The spook alley has no age restrictions and is considered appropriate for all ages. “We want parents to know they can bring children of all ages to the spook alley, we have real people in the barn, not fancy machines that know no age limits,” said Bishop Durrant.
The Rees family have graciously allowed for this community event to be held on their property. “We are excited for the carnival. We hope it becomes a Morgan tradition” said Megan Clark, a Rees family representative.
Multiple groups have already contributed several hours preparing for the carnival; including the Rees family. “We have spent the past week preparing fields to accommodate easy parking,” said Scott Rees, head of the Rees family. The 10th Ward has set a goal to have at least 100 families attend the carnival. The Rees family has reportedly prepared enough parking to accommodate at least double the 10th Ward’s goal.

Charlie Davies is physically in stable, but critical condition. His public image however is growing at light speed; or maybe even faster, at social media speed.
The team mates, friends and supporters have set up facebook groups, twitter tags, re-tweet please messages, email addresses, and supporting t-shirts. Some big names in soccer have gotten involved in the support of Charlie Davies; Stuart Holden, Brian Ching, Freddy Adu, Chris Wingert, Maurice Edu, Jozy Altidore, Aleco Eskindarian, and Sacha Kljestan.
Countless twitter tweets have been sent to Davies. Family, friends and fans have been sending well wishes for Davies continuously since the accident. A tag has been created for Davies so all his supporters can meet each other and exchange concerns and well wishes for Davies. A number 9 twitter banner has been created that you can add to your twitter picture. Most Davies team mates and family have added the banner. Fans and fellow players alike have been tweeting and re-tweeting well wishes and concerns for Davies since the accident happened.
Davies team mates and friends set up an email account for all the grieving fans to send Davies their well wishes promising that they would print them all off and take them to Davies in the Washington DC area hospital where he is currently recovering. The email address is charliedavies9@yahoo.com if anyone wants to send well wishes to Davies.
Objectivo, a well-known online soccer apparel store has made available a Charlie Davies shirt with a portion of the proceeds going to Davies’s family and his recovery. Several well-known soccer blogs are covering every detail of Davies recovery.
I am really surprised by the intense support Davies and his family is receiving. I think in public relations we really under estimate the power of social media. The publicity Davies is receiving because of loyal fans is truly amazing. Public relations can happen in so many different places and ways.
2300 Thoughts
Tuesday October 13, 2009 at 3:15 a.m. United States Men’s National Team starting forward Charlie Davies was in a fatal car accident. Three people were in the single car accident; Davies, an unidentified driver, and a young female that passed away during the early morning accident. Davies was wearing his seatbelt in the passenger seat and sustained major injuries. Davies, 23, is facing an arduous six- to 12-month recovery and extensive rehabilitation after undergoing surgery for a broken right femur and tibia, a broken left elbow, facial fractures and a lacerated bladder. Davies was taken out of critical condition on October 19.
The opening paragraph is only background information since I am pretty sure no one except for huge soccer supporters know the details about this situation, or even that it happened. The public relations surrounding this situation have been really remarkable I think. Davies’s team mates and fans have initiated huge amounts of publicity support for Davies.
The United States Men’s National Team played at RFK Stadium on October 14, in a World Cup Qualification match against Costa Rica, a game Davies would have started. During the ninth minute the entire crowd stood and held up sheets of paper with “9” on them, to show support and well wishes for Davies. Nine being the number Davies wears on his jersey for the United States National Team. The same thing happened at Rio Tinto Stadium in Salt Lake City during the ninth minute of the Major League Soccer game between ReAL Salt Lake and the New York Red Bulls.
At the ReAL Red Bull game both teams and the referees all wore “Davies 9” shirts during the National Anthem and team introductions to show their individual support for Davies and his family during this hard time for them.
I think the support during these two games is really remarkable and interesting because supporters groups created the signs, provided printed copies of the signs and encouraged wide participation of other fans. I think this is unique because these fans have reached the point of taking action and even recommending the product that is I guess Charlie Davies. I think the free public relations the Davies brand is receiving is really amazing and just goes to prove that if you are good at what you do people will notice and support.

Michael Jordan was pictured smoking a cigar at Harding Park during the Presidents Cup in San Francisco. When I first saw this article I thought it would be about Jordan’s public image and needing to be a better role model for children, well that was definitely not where this article went at all. The article goes into the fact that Harding Park is a public place, one that in San Francisco you cannot smoke at. No one can smoke at…supposedly.
Well I began to think that Jordan probably just did not realize that fact, he probably does not pay too much attention to the laws. Well I was dead wrong. Jordan not only knew, but merely chose to completely disregard the laws. Jordan claimed to have "heard this is a public place, so they limit what you can smoke. I'm not even supposed to be smoking, but this was a practice round and no one said anything."
Ideally, Jordan said, he would like to smoke "a minimum of three" cigars per round, according to PGATour.com. I think those two quotes really say something about the public relation image management that will soon be coming for Jordan. I would definitely say Jordan was not prepped with talking points before he met with the media over this little issue. I think that this little issue will become a large scenario because of the comments made by Jordan. I certainly hope to see some image management coming soon. This has left a bad taste in my mouth regarding Jordan, and judging from the comments regarding this I would say many others feel the same way I do.
I also think an interesting quote that will require some image management on a much smaller scale is one made by Matt Dorsey San Francisco city attorney spokesman.
“In 2006, the city Board of Supervisors voted to include public golf courses among the parks that would ban smoking. A violation could net a $100 fine. "But don't expect me to ask him for it," City attorney's spokesman Matt Dorsey told the Chronicle.”
We will see if he needs to do a little bit of public relations about being too scared to enforce the law when celebrities are in question, or will the public understand it would be hard to tell Jordan no. We will see if anything else comes from this. I think he will need to make a public relations move to become tougher on celebrities.

ReAL Salt Lake announced on their team blog this week that they would be having a super sized Carnival ReAL before ReAL Salt Lake’ s match versus Chivas Guadalajara. I think this was a very smart public relations move. I think Carnival ReAL has been a great idea that has just not been executed well. ReAL Salt Lake took advantage of a guaranteed large crowd.
This is a perfect game to super size Carnival ReAL. Almost sold out crowd of devoted soccer supporters were bound to attend this game. Having the soccer atmosphere super sized was a great idea. I think ReAL Salt Lake was trying to get more of the Chivas Guadalajara fans that live close to become ReAL Salt Lake fans. I am not sure this was a realistic goal, but I do think it was the intention of ReAL Salt Lake.
I do not think this goal was realistic because Chivas Guadalajara has already created a sister team in the United States in fellow Major League Soccer (MLS) team Chivas USA. Most Chivas Guadalajara fans that live in the United States have become supporters of Chivas USA. Chivas USA was an expansion team the same year ReAL Salt Lake entered the league. I would be hard pressed to see such dedicated fans supporting a local team over their “home” team. I do think ReAL Salt Lake left a good impression though and can easily see Chivas USA fans attending matches between Chivas USA and ReAL Salt Lake.
Some of the events included in the Super Sized Carnival ReAL were a juggling stage, mini-kick game, and a tent where fans could download Boost Mobile ringtones to their phones. Bud Light’s “Bud Girls” offered various giveaway items. KFC gave away vouchers. The carnival area also included the BK Whopper Hopper and the Mountain America Credit Union Speed Kick in addition to giveaways by XanGo, Western Union, X-Insurance, Rocky Mountain Chevy Dealers and Vitality Nutrition. I think the diversity of the events for fans was good and got lots of attendees involved in the Carnival ReAL.
I think ReAL Salt Lake did a really good job on this public relations event before the match. The only complaint in the comments section on the team blog Behind the Shield was concerns that there were no bathrooms available to the public during the pre match festivities at Carnival ReAL. Something that can and should easily be fixed for future events. Over all I would say the Super Sized Carnival ReAL was a success.

Ages will be broken down, and marked as follows: 3 years-old and below, yellow; 4-7 years-old, purple; 8-12 years-old, orange; 12 years-old and up black. Carnival games will range from traditional to innovative depending on age group.

The Reese family have graciously allowed for this community event to be held on their property. “We are excited for the carnival. We hope it becomes a Morgan tradition” said Megan Clark, a Reese family representative.
Multiple groups have already contributed several hours preparing for the carnival; including the Reese family. “We have spent the past week preparing fields to accommodate easy parking,” said Scott Reese, head of the Reese family. The 10th Ward has set a goal to have at least 100 families attend the carnival. The Rees family has reportedly prepared enough parking to accommodate at least double the 10th Ward’s goal.

Via Twitter, I discovered www.stuholden.com; a very interesting public relations site for Houston Dynamo, and United States Men’s National team midfielder Stuart Holden. The page appears to be created by Holden and his personal public relations specialist. The posts from Holden’s twitter account also seem to support this fact.
I think it is a great idea! The page is wonderful. The page incorporates both his time spent with the United States Men’s National team and his club career with the Houston Dynamo. The page involves lots of different types of media to draw in a variety of fans and supporter levels. I would have to say this is one of the better player based supporters web pages I have seen in a long time, although it is close to Jimmy Conrad’s, captain of the Kansas City Wizards and former United States Men’s National team regular.
This web page is so well put together it is really amazing. I think they have branded Holden correctly and fit his page to work with his branding. The page includes features like: stuvideos, stuq&a, stugiveaways, stulivestream, stunews, and stuphotos. I can really see this kind of page becoming a regular “must have” among bigger athletes in the near future.
I think the stugiveaways is a fantastic idea; it really pulls supporters to his page. To be able to win an autographed Stuart Holden bobble head you need to register an account with his page. I think this is another smart move on his public relations part. I can definitely see this opportunity getting several people of different support levels to register with their web page. This is a good way for them to track the demographics of the people that are following Holden.
I really like how Holden promoted his new web page. He started by posting a link on his twitter account. So some of his biggest fans were the first to get the news and were able to spread it to their friends. The page is already wildly successful in my eyes because of the volume of quotes it has already received in it short existence.
Wonderful public relations at work on stuholden.com. Nice work.

In conjunction with the Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star Game against English Premier League team Everton at Rio Tinto Stadium MLS featured several All-Stars in a “Lifestyle Shoot.” The Lifestyle Shoot was done in Salt Lake City. ReAL Salt Lake All-Star’s Kyle Beckerman and Javier Morales were both featured in the Lifestyle Shoot.
I think MLS did the Lifestyle Shoot as a total publicity opportunity. They featured players from multiple teams with very diverse backgrounds. They were smart because all the different markets where each player came from brought more people to their web page. I also think it was smart to include players with different cultural backgrounds, because people from those countries that normally do not care about MLS would come to the page to see a hometown hero. I think they made a smart move in who the included in this Lifestyle Shoot.
MLS included Javier Morales from Argentina, Fredy Montero from Columbia, and Cuauhtemoc Blanco from Mexico. Blanco has been a legend in his country for many years and continues to play for the Mexican National Team. His popularity was a wonderful addition to this Lifestyle Shoot. Some very big names from soccer nations.
I think the Lifestyle Shoot was well timed. Several soccer blogs and forums have been talking a lot about wanting to know what their heroes on the field are like off the field. I think this Lifestyle Shoot really accomplished that task. I think MLS really listened to their public on this one and actually got it really right on target.
After the video and pictures were posted on MLSnet.com there were several positive comments on team blogs and on soccer blogs across the web. From what I can find this Lifestyle Shoot was very well planned out and received. I think MLS was very smart in the way the put this together and they way they got it out to their publics. I also think they were very smart in the way they tried to expand their publics with the players that they chose to participate.

Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber announced recently that the league will finally adhere to next year’s international dead weeks associated with the World Cup 2010 in South Africa. International dead weeks occur during World Cup Qualifying, and Group Stages.
I think this fact alone is a huge realization that MLS public relations have come a very long way. In the past MLS has chosen to ignore international dead weeks. Every other league in the world follows international dead weeks. It is a huge move in promoting soccer in the United States to the soccer supporters who have moved here from other countries, or who have international traditions related to soccer.
It will be better for the league to not be known as the ones that refuse to become part of the world wide sport. It will be better for the players in the MLS. Players will not have to miss league games to play for their country. The MLS teams that have several international stars will not have to deal with large player shortages for those games either.
I think this is a big stride in the right direction for MLS. Several soccer supporters living in the United States do not support MLS because of the poor public relations the league has performed in the past. I think Commissioner Garber has really benefited the league with public relations. He has brought in new professionals that are making good important decisions for the league and in turn for the reputation of MLS in the United States and across the world.
2300 Thoughts
A recent trend in World Cup Qualifier matches has been to only show the games on internet pay per view sites. I thought that this horrible atrocity was only happening to the men’s United States National team, but today was informed that is certainly not the case. England, one of the powerhouse soccer countries will be forced to endure the same kind of insanity that the United States soccer fans have been forced into.
England's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in Kiev on the evening of October 10 will be screened exclusively live over the internet in the UK for the first time ever. As you would imagine English supporters are not happy with the decision. Instead of being able to watch the match from their favorite pubs, they will be forced to watch an internet stream (probably poor quality and slightly delayed) or pay to sit in a crummy theater to support their national team as they attempt to quality for the World Cup, the premier sporting even in the world.
I think this is just terrible public relations! The countries (Ukraine, Honduras, Mexico) are not allowing important home matches to be seen on widely available television stations in opposing nations. This practice is starting to make some national team’s not want to play “friendly matches” against these countries. I think they are really putting up a gigantic warning sign to other countries.
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, by not allowing supporters to watch matches will only lead to more pirating of games and more illegal streams on free web sites. With all the money supporters spend on merchandise and tickets I think it is pushing it a little too far to require them to also pay to watch games on television, more than they already pay for the sports channels that frequently stream the matches.
I think the practice of not streaming important matches in opposing countries will quickly come to an end. I predict FIFA will step in before World Cup Qualifying ends and force countries to provide a reasonable means for opposing country supporters to view the matches. FIFA’s public relations team is just too good to allow this kind of ridiculous behavior to continue under its good name.

I think ReAL Salt Lake is making great strides in their public relations this coming month. The team does not have a Major League Soccer match this week. I am very happy that they will be spending some of that “free” time doing good things in their community. Some of the projects I am especially impressed with are the "Shopping with the Stars," “Mascot Bowl,” “G.O.A.L.S. for Greatness Golf Outing & BBQ,” and the "Get a Kick Out of Reading" challenge.
Members of the team, mascot, and staff will be participating in these and more events throughout the state. Most of them are being held at elementary schools or for elementary and middle school age children. I think this is a good public relations move because a majority of children that age are playing soccer in our community. Young children are very susceptible to surrounding influences so when they have the opportunity to be influenced for good I think that is positive.
I am happy to see that ReAL Salt Lake is going to be using their “star power” for good in our community this week. I look forward to hearing about more events like they have scheduled. I think they will be very positively received and make a big impact on the children they interact with.
The article I got this information from was interesting. It was on the team web page, but it looked like and read like an article until you got down to the bottom right before the printable schedule and there was a little media pitch. I thought that was interesting because after reading the ending it made it seem like they were trying to write a press release, but just did not understand how. I thought that was interesting and will be interested to see if there actually is any media coverage for their up coming events.

2300 Thoughts
I think it is smart public relations for ReAL Salt Lake to include a segment they call “game day notes,” or videos of players and coaches talking about the challenges of upcoming matches, on their team blog. I think this feature is smart and highly enjoyed by the fans that frequently visit their blog.
However, one major downfall of these segments on the team blog Behind the Shield is they cut off the question. You only hear the player or coach talking. The viewer has no clue what the question was, so really has no ability to put what the player or coach is talking about into context. For example they asked a question regarding a specific player on another team and how ReAL Salt Lake would handle the challenges he created. Well in the response to the question the player only says “he” “we will defend as a unit to counter act the challenges “he” provides to our team.” What? Who? Hu?
The problem with not including the question is the viewer has no context. I frequently get lost while listening to the “game day notes” video clips. I often wonder how what they are saying has anything to do with the upcoming game. I just sit there, listen, and try to make up my own question that might make their answer make sense.
I have actually stopped watching the “game day notes” because I just get so frustrated by not knowing what they are supposedly talking about. This same frustration is also echoed by others in the comments section of the blog. I would think ReAL Salt Lake would monitor the comments sections on the different segments and at least try to integrate some of the suggestions to their blog.
It would not take that much more effort to simply not edit out the questions asked. I think this is a simple way to make several fans happier. I would strongly encourage ReAL Salt Lake to read the comments and listen. The comments give ReAL Salt Lake almost instant feedback as to how their fan public is receiving information.

ReAL Salt Lake’s front office has done it again. In an attempt to excite fans about the team’s 2010 home opener, announced earlier in the week by Major League Soccer officials, ReAL Salt Lake’s front office wrote an attempted press release and posted it to the team blog Behind the Shield.
It all started out looking good, a short couple of paragraphs and a great picture of some ReAL Salt Lake fans showing their support. As you read the paragraphs it was interesting and well put together. Sighting the unpredictable spring weather in Utah as the reason ReAL Salt Lake will be playing their first game of the season away in 2010 just as was scheduled in 2009. I thought that was a great explanation to keep the fans subdued even though I am sure they were disappointed again.
The trouble all starts with the closing line, “Get excited! 2010’s just around the corner…”
Just around the corner? What! This season is not even over yet. The real problem lies in the fact that ReAL Salt Lake is on the verge of making the play-offs on a wild card trip. As a big fan I thought that line was terrible. It makes it sound like ReAL Salt Lake has given up on this season and will not be fighting hard to get the wild card spot they can legitimately still claim. "No play-offs people lets look forward to next season..." is the message they actually portrayed.
I am not the only fan that feels that way either. The very first comment posted agrees with my observation of the article, “Get excited! 2010’s just around the corner… So are we packing it in this year?” said Nussdorfer AC.
I think this is a horribly botched opportunity by ReAL Salt Lake. They started out with a great idea and found a good picture, but the final execution was just not there. A better more informed writer should have be contacted to write this piece. I think it would help ReAL Salt Lake if their employees were real soccer fans and actually kept up with the team and what is going on so they could better see things from their public’s point of view.

Who Are Ya Designs has recently extended their brand to youth sports commentary shirts. I think this move is brilliant! The youth soccer numbers in this country are actually quite large. The opportunities for this company are bright.
The youth company is called Yellow Card Shirts. I think that name is smart because that is a soccer way of saying “tough guy shirts” or “aggressive player shirts.” I think youth players will really latch on to this company. I know when I was starting out in soccer I would have really enjoyed shirts like Yellow Card Shirts is now offering.
I think they have put together a really smart marketing campaign. They started advertising the new company on Who Are Ya Designs’ web page. So all the “soccer moms” that purchase from Who Are Ya Designs will see the advertisement and want to go to Yellow Card Shirts to pick out some shirts for their little soccer stars.
And intense soccer fans like me will spread the word and purchase shirts for the youth that they know. I know I will be giving all of my nieces and nephews that are old enough to wear youth shirts product from Yellow Card Shirts this year for Christmas. I can easily see some of those shirts being designated team shirts and purchased by soccer coaches for their teams.
The majority of the shirts are replicas of shirts on the Who Are Ya Designs page (ex: Throwball, Here Come the Yanks, Lets see you run for 90min, Bob Played, Nutmeg, I spit on my gloves, and Messi10) . So the parents can have a similar shirt to their child. Also coaches and fans can wear similar shirts to games. The most interesting addition shirts were the Mia Hamm, Match Fit, and "If it was easy it would be baseball" shirts on the Yellow Card Shirts.
The one edit to a shirt that really strikes me as intelligent is the “Divers” shirts. They created a “G” rated version of the shirt for Yellow Card Shirts. Instead of the shirt reading “Divers are Wankers” as it does on Who Are Ya Designs, the youth shirt reads “Divers are Cheaters” much more age appropriate in my opinion.
Just a side note I think another clever thing they did was used Yellow Card in the name. They may get some random hits from people looking to purchase “Yellow Card shirts” and finding their web page, not a page associated with the band.
All in all I think they have done a good job with advertising this smart market addition. I think they will be very successful in this new market.

Whoever is running Volkswagen’s Junior Masters Tournament public relations/advertising campaign is a genius!
The promotions they have put together are so well done for their target audience, which is really unusual in the United States. Their target audience is soccer players, fans, and parents. Usually companies just seem to miss the picture of what their target market actually cares about and what it really wants to see.
Well Volkswagen has got it right! They have created a tournament similar to the World Cup, but for youth around the world. They are using the same format, including qualifying rounds and knock out rounds. They are not only getting young players and their families to pay attention they are getting the entire soccer community involved with their “Celebration Camp.”
They have produced eight (so far) commercial type videos in which goal celebration coach Umberto Santiago Antonio Rodriguez uses Major League Soccer (MLS) players to demonstrate how to “properly” celebrate a goal. Coach Rodriguez is hilarious. He has some of the greatest lines that only soccer publics would understand and find humorous, thus illustrating that Volkswagen actually understands their publics. I personally laughed so hard I almost fell off my chair SEVERAL times while watching the eight celebration videos. I sent the link to multiple people and only received positive responses back to the celebrations videos.
One strength of this campaign is the use of MLS players in the videos. ReAL Salt Lake, Columbus Crew, Chicago Fire, Houston Dynamo, New England Revolution, and Seattle Sounders FC players are featured in the clips. The nationalities of the participants also vary providing an increased fan base for each participant, and a greater “bang for your buck” feature for Volkswagen.
All of the players selected are distinguished MLS players, providing deeper credibility to Volkswagen, and an even bigger humor factor for the fans. Seeing some of these legends participate in such hilarious goal celebrations was an interesting draw for me. I think it was very smart of Volkswagen to go after some of the “big boys” to participate in their campaign it really made a difference in the quality of the final product.
Being a huge ReAL Salt Lake fan, I would personally recommend The Rock Star, The Piñata, Toot the Boot, and The Cranky Donkey, but they are all hilarious.
Great work by Volkswagen they have really found something here. Along with being the front of jersey sponsor for DC United I think this will really increase their brand recognition among the growing niche group of soccer publics in the United States.

2300 Thoughts
I think a MLS team that is really great innovative public relations in fan interaction is the Houston Dynamo. They were the first MLS team to create a social media network for the fans, and they have continued to be the leader in interactive features. Their team blog “Forever Orange” is packed with interactive things for their fans to do. Just in doing some research for this piece I wasted several hours looking at all the cool things they had available to their fans. Some of the best and most unique things the Houston Dynamo Forever Orange page features are
• Game day cartoons featuring Dynamo members and opponents
• Weekly player features
• Forever Orange commercials (in English and Spanish)
• Featured fan blogs
• Video collections from fans and the team
• Fan forum front and center on the home page
• Featured photos from fans and players
• Featured events including games, watch parties, and charity events
• Players pages with links to personal blogs and videos posted
• Chat feature that allows mydynamo members to chat online
I was so impressed with the innovation of the Forever Orange page. The Houston Dynamo has really put together a great place to cultivate truly informed fans. The Houston Dynamo are really building a strong brand by hitting a large number of publics with their current public relations with their fan base. I am sure the Forever Orange page is increasing their fan base, because just from my time spent on the page they have made a fan out of me.
2300 Thoughts
As a huge fan of ReAL Salt Lake, and a season ticket holder for 3 years I would like to offer some suggestions to the organization regarding their “team blog.”
Let’s begin with basics, the design of the blog. It has a gray background with a white strip down the middle for their content. Gray is boring! And ReAL Salt Lake’s colors are Red, Blue, and Yellow. If you want to get specific their actual colors are Crimson and Cobalt. From a public relations stand point a team this new to an area and a league should be trying to build their brand, ReAL Salt Lake is definitely not taking the opportunity to do so with their current team blog. (If you would like to see a team actually doing a good job of building their brand look at Seattle Sounders FC, this is their first year in the league and they already have a phenomenal team blog.)
Multiple ReAL Salt Lake fans have started their own blogs about the team, and actually have more followers than the teams own blog. I personally would say that is because of the lack of interesting content on ReAL Salt Lake’s team blog. I think the current content on the blog is quality; they just need to add more quality content, and a much larger variety. The current “Across the Ticker” feature is good, and takes very little time to put up, but has very little content soccer fans have not already read, most of the articles are taken from other blogs and a few news sources, this feature needs to be ramped up.
Other Major League Soccer teams are frequently writing articles or doing small interviews about their players on their blogs. Jimmy Conrad of the Kansas City Wizards hosts his own radio show every week and has it streamed over the web. Supporters groups have been featured on other MLS team blogs, ReAL Salt Lake has multiple supporters groups that could be featured. I think this is a great opportunity the ReAL Salt Lake is missing out on.
Last year they started a bit called the “Kyle and Javi Show,” and put out several episodes. The “Kyle and Javi Show” featured two key players for ReAL Salt Lake in, team captain, Kyle Beckerman and Javier Morales. Fans loved it the episodes always got the most positive comments on the blog. I think ReAL Salt Lake should start producing episodes of the “Kyle and Javi Show” again to draw fans back to the team blog.
So in short my suggestions to ReAL Salt Lake for their team blog upgrade would be
• Create a better color scheme for the blog with a more intense soccer design
• Feature quality “inside” player articles and interviews
• Read fan comments and try to implement suggestions

United Breaks Guitars
In this situation I think the organization with good public relations is Dave Carroll and his band, Sons of Maxwell. Carroll found a way to use his personal skills to change the feeling the public had about United Airlines, he formed a place for those that felt similar to him to come together and be heard. I find it most interesting that he warned United and they still did not care, because they obviously do not understand the power of social media.
I really like how Ryan McCarthy of the Huffington Post put it, “After United repeatedly declined to reimburse him for the damage, he wrote a now-famous song decrying their customer service and their brand. It was funny, justified and smart.” I completely agree with that statement, most of all with the smart piece. Carroll obviously understood the potential power of social media; although even he was shocked by how well the song was received as mentioned in his personal blog. “My goal: to get one million hits in one year. To date I have written “United: Song 1” and “United: Song 2” and I’m proud to now release the first video in the trilogy. The response has been incredible so far. Everyone involved in the recording of the track and filming/editing of the video has volunteered their time and pre-production work is underway for the filming of United: Song 2 (hopefully to be released later this summer).”
I also agree with Ryan McCarthy on the justified side. The fact that he warned United just cracks me up. Carroll gave them the opportunity to get out of the entire mess even after they had wasted several months of his life, and they still would not do any better than refusing his claim over email. After all the time they spent telling him no, I cannot help you, go here, or ask them you would think it would have just been easier to give him a little something; Carroll seems like a very reasonable person, after all he dropped his claim from the $3000 the guitar was worth to merely $1200 the cost of repairs.
Carroll illustrated United’s customer service system perfectly I thought on his blog, “It occurred to me that I had been fighting a losing battle all this time and that fighting over this at all was a waste of time. The system is designed to frustrate affected customers into giving up their claims and United is very good at it.” What a terrible customer service department model. You would think that he must be joking there is no way this can be true a company really utilizing such a ridiculous “customer service” model. Well, just read a few of the comments on the United Breaks Guitars video on You Tube and see for yourself.
“United used my ex girlfriends luggage as a parking break for a jumbo jet” fenixwylde
“United messed up now... they should have just paid for the guitar. Now 5 million people won't fly with them!!! Lol” NevaehChyne
“I hope they go Bankrupt, they broke my luggage too.” rolitofc
Those were some of the nicer comments on You Tube. I really hope the United public relation specialists get out on the internet and really analyze what this whole experience has cost their company. I honestly think it will take them a very long time, and a very experienced, hopefully expensive, public relations team to repair the damage they have done to their customer relationships.
I like that in this situation you can see when United’s public relations department seemingly gets involved. I think this statement is definitely something from United’s public relations specialists, “his video is excellent, and we plan to use it internally as a unique learning and training opportunity to ensure that all our customers receive better service....This should have been fixed much sooner."
I like that they acknowledged the quality of his video, but using the video for internal training? What? Where? Are they going to use the video as training of what not to do for baggage handlers? I mean the video is hilarious and United definitely needs to do some internal training, but I just struggle to find a legitimate use for the video in the internal training. Maybe they will use it to teach them how to use social media now that would be a useful skill for anyone in that company to understand.
The thing that makes this story so interesting to me is that I definitely did not understand the power of social media. This situation has been a great learning experience for me. I spend very little time using social media and probably would have been a little ignorant like Ms. Irlweg. Now I know I have grossly underestimated the power of social media. I am excited to learn more about social media and the benefits, and consequences that it can have for an organization in the public relations side of their business.
The only reason that this story is even a big deal is social media. Nothing like this could have ever happened ten, even five years ago. I am so excited now, this story has really got me pumped up about what we as regular people can do now when we unite for a good cause, and best of all we can afford it do it with social media.
I really like that we the people can have a big influence on how we are treated by large organizations. I really hope organizations are following this story and understanding how important Carroll has made customer service for all of them. Carroll has set the standard for consumers not only organizations. I would not be surprised to hear about more videos or groups being produced to fight for similar kinds of things.

Hey Darren!
August 31, 2009
Dear Darren,
When I got your letter I thought it was so funny that out of all my degrees the one you wanted more information about was Public Relations. I thought “Agriculture Communication” seemed way more obscure, but I am more than happy to tell you all about Public Relations.
Basically public relations is finding the good in something (person, company, etc) and then telling people about it, ok so there you go! It is actually much more complicated than that, but that gives you the basic idea. I will be promoting a client. I will be trying to tell the groups that matter the most to my client the best things or most important things about my client in a variety of ways.
One great thing about Public Relations is there is more than one way to do everything, and I really like that flexibility. I will be given a job by my client and then pretty much let loose to do my research and create the best plan I can to help them get their desired result.
The thing that excites me about Public Relations is the diversity. There are so many different things you can do that are still considered Public Relations. For instance some of the different responsibilities a Public Relations Professional may be required to do are:
· Write press releases, news paper articles, newsletter articles etc.
· Research different groups that are important to the company
· Plan a company event
· Provide opinion on advertising campaigns
· Meet with the media
· Make speeches
· Establish and maintain relationships (with other companies, professionals, important people)
· Identify key group interests
· Work with web designers
· Determine and purchase advertising spaces
Through my internships and the time I spent as the Student Body Publicity Coordinator at LDS Business College I have had opportunity to have a major role in the performing of all of those tasks.
Another great thing about Public Relations is the job availability. Everyone and everything can use Public Relations, so no matter where I end up living there will always be a Public Relations job somewhere nearby. Since everyone needs Public Relations I will also have the benefit of being able to choose what kind of company I want to work for, what size of company I want to work for and so on. The field is basically wide open for Public Relations positions available.
I hope all of this makes sense to you! I cannot wait to hear from you again soon!
Take Care,
Jill
