No Tweet Apologies

United States Mens National soccer team star forward, Jozy Altidore was recently fined an undisclosed amount, and benched for one game at his current club Hull City for apologizing for being late to a match. Altidore publicly apologized via his twitter account for being late to the match. However, Hull City manager Phil Brown was not pleased with his young striker’s decision.

Brown did not want the team’s business being so readily available online, but Altidore seemed to want to make sure everyone knew that he was sorry for his tardy arrival. Altidore is only 19 years old, and frequently posts updates for his fans on his twitter account.

The tardiness of Altidore was not in the main soccer media until Brown threw a hissy fit. I think that Altidore tweeting about his tardiness was not that big of a deal. In fact my personal bias is that I like it and it made me respect Altidore even more. I think the public relations blunder came on Brown’s part making such a big stink about the tweet.

Rumors are now that Brown is soon to be released by Hull City. Not only for this instance of course, but his constant media/public relations blunders combined with lack of performance on the field has caused Brown’s job to be called into serious consideration.

I think this goes to show how much public relations affect everything around us. Every industry is affected by public relations. After the final decision is made on the current manager of Hull City it will be interesting to see what kind of public relations move Hull City makes. They have some very unhappy fans that will need to be soothed by more than just improvements in the teams play.
